As a teacher, I want to address the disconnect between people and science through experiential learning and active participation in citizen science opportunities
At the core of my mahi, I believe all students can learn and make meaningful contributions when given the opportunity. Through the Experiencing Marine Reserves programme we centre our education programme around experiential learning - allowing students to learn about marine science and ocean issues by experiencing them first hand. While traditional classroom learning and lectures are important for education, students often become disengaged without interactive experiences. In this programme, we emphasise field excursions - taking students to their local stream/marine environment before taking them to New Zealand's oldest no-take marine reserve - Goat Island - Cape Rodney-Okakari Point Marine Reserve.
Students have the opportunity to participate in marine monitoring through Sustainable Coastline's Litter Intelligence programme and the Marine Meter Squared monitoring programme. Students are also empowered to ask their own questions and develop their own monitoring programmes and outreach through the student led Action Project component of the EMR programme.
Through my work at the University of Auckland and role as President of the UoA Marine Science Society I have a mentorship roles. Providing one-on-one mentorship has allowed me to better share resources, and support the personal and professional interests of students. This mentorship has taken the form of training new UMSS members in running club activities and science outreach, community outreach and talks, and supporting their students working towards dissertations and thesis'.
